    About us

The Fibres, Textiles and Clothing unit at the International Trade Centre (ITC) is dedicated to empowering the industry through sustainable practices, along the entire value chain from natural fibre production to clothing manufacturing. Strengthening the capacities of fibres, textiles and clothing manufacturers is our main mission, making them more competitive, socially and environmentally sustainable, resilient and able to comply with emerging market and regulatory developments.

At the institutional level, we work with Textile & Clothing-related business support organizations, academia and training institutions in developing countries to develop sustainable and reliable partnerships to effectively support the industry.

Through tailored training, coaching, and advisory services, ITC supports farmers, manufacturers, companies, business support organizations, academia, among other stakeholders to overcome challenges in the fibre to clothing value chain.

We provide a neutral UN-enabled environment where manufacturers and industry stakeholders can discuss common concerns, build partnerships, increase efficiency and reduce costs along the value chain. ITC is the joint agency of the World Trade Organization and the United Nations.

The Global Textiles and Clothing Programme (GTEX) and its associated initiative in the Middle East and North Africa (MENATEX) Phase 2 expands its scope to include Sri Lanka while maintaining its focus on the MENA region (Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia). The GTEX/MENATEX programme encourages textile and clothing exports , stimulating employment and income generation along the entire value chain. Building upon the achievements from Phase 1, Phase 2 (2024-2027) focuses on sustainability, circularity and digitalization aspects to ensure lasting impact and success of the programme. Our GTEX/MENATEX programme is financed by the Government of Sweden, the Government of Switzerland and the Government of Spain.

In addition, the United Kingdom Trade Partnerships Programme (UKTP) collaborates with African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries, including Nepal, Ethiopia, Ghana, Madagascar, and Tanzania, to enhance competitiveness of the Textiles and Clothing sector by leveraging benefits of the Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS) and therefore facilitating improved access to the UK and EU markets. The programme’s core focus lies in building the capacity of small and medium-sized enterprises along the T&C value chain. This encompasses technical skills training, quality improvement, lean manufacturing practices, support for sustainable material sourcing and product development, and bolstering marketing and sales capacities. UKTP is funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

The ACP cotton project works within the Zambian and Tanzanian cotton-to-clothing sector value chain, focusing on increasing cotton yields and fibre value addition. The programme is jointly implemented with the International Cotton Advisory Committee and addresses aspects of regenerative agriculture with focus on carbon sequestration (through the extensive use of biochar from cotton stalks and other biomass for soil health improvement) and yield enhancement as well as artisanal fibre value addition, especially for female farmers. The project is jointly funded by the OACPS and the EU.

A multi-donors approach supports the cashmere sector in Nepal: first, under EU-funded Nepal Trade and Investment Programme (EU-TIP), a Chyangra Pashmina trade strategy and action plan was elaborated, involving stakeholders across the value chain. A key focus of the strategy implementation is strengthening backward linkages with goat farmers in the Himalaya and developing a first-ever complete supply chain from fibre to the final export product, entirely made in Nepal.

The UKTP programme in Nepal promotes sustainable export markets for Nepalese pashmina products by strengthening forward linkages and providing comprehensive training and capacity building. The programme focuses on key areas such as environmental assessment, marketing and communications, and establishing B2B market linkages, among others. UKTP is funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
